A person or other being alien to your experience
Pen and paper

This is an unusual exercise, even for us, but an important one. Remember our discussion of the difference between affordances and functional coloring – that we can use affordance theory to feel our way back, as it were, into the experience (the sensorium, the worldview, the needs, the capacities) of people or beings unlike ourselves. The project for this week is to understand how objects address (are designed for / are adopted by) different types of users. Choose someone or something (not limited to humans!) unlike yourself. Can you develop a tool that will help us, in using it, to understand or share their experience – how they (literally or figuratively) see the world?

Describe this “empathy tool,” how it would work, and its effects.
