Outline a critical making exercise.
Choose a topic: it should be somewhat problematic in a complex way – something about which we can think critically – and to do with technology. (Remember Ratto’s examples: distance learning, “walled garden” social networks, net neutrality.)
What kind of prototyping / making exercise would be appropriate for a critical making event for a group to address this? Get concrete: what stuff would they need? (Roughly – don’t worry about specifying makes/models/precise names of hardware, etc.) What would they do with the stuff?
A few thoughts from today to keep in mind:
finding the sweet spot of metaphor where the prototyping isn’t so far away from the topic that it’s hard to connect, but not so close that it just turns into an inadequate model
will personal investment in the prototyped object make a difference in the workshop?
is there anything you can do with the context of the critical making event to make it work better?
Bring these in on Wednesday and we’ll discuss.
